US Tour Summer 2011
So whilst Dan and Matt went in search of the sun and latest roller-coasters in Florida (and a couple of ground hops) I did what every decent ground hopper does and blew all my money on a three week trip seeing as much sport and as many grounds as I could. This year’s destination; the East Coast of America and my favourite “American” sport of baseball. I appreciate that you either get it or you don’t with their sports (I simply don’t get basketball for example) but put any prejudices over this aside, and you will find a whole new world of sports arenas.
The grand tour 2011 started in Baltimore with two games at one of America’s finest, Camden Yards. Sandwiched in between these games was a trip down to nearby Washington to see DC United take on Everton at the out dated (and apparently unloved) RFK Stadium. Leaving Baltimore (not without some pictures of the home of the Ravens) for a few days in the Capital (taking in a visit to the Army American Football stadium in Annapolis) sightseeing was interrupted for an evening’s visited to the new home of the Washington Nationals. A walk to the train station that evening provided an opportunity for a few snaps of the outside of the city’s Basketball and Ice Hockey Arena.
Then onto the one stop shop of sports that is Philadelphia and the extraordinary car park to the south of the city that houses Citizens Bank Park (for two games of the Phillies) Lincoln Financial Field (home of the American Football Eagles) and the Wells Fargo Arena. Philadelphia (or rather Chester 20 miles to the south) provided my first viewing of MLS at PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union.
New York was next. A great ride on the Station Island Ferry to the homely confines of minor league Station Island Yankees, was followed the next day by a game at an incredibly disappointing Yankee Stadium (the day salvaged by a stop at the timeless Yankee Tavern in the Bronx). New York was saved by the surprisingly impressive Citi Field (home of the unsurprisingly unimpressive Mets) and a few pics of the neighbouring Flushing Meadow Tennis Complex (home of the US Open).
And finally to Boston and the wonderful museum of baseball that is Fenway Park. Add to that a few pictures of the home of the Celtics and Bruins and a stop off at Foxboro at the nice looking home of the New England Patriots and you have 17 stadiums to have a look at!
Enjoy!
