A Little Bit of Research is a Good Thing
The second weekend in December bought the first serious snow of the winter. All games outside of the top league in Belgium were cancelled, as were all amateur games in Holland following the shocking events in Almere the week before with the death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen.
Extraordinary efforts by the fans and officials at Dordrecht meant that Friday night football at Krommedijk was ok, and NAC played Feijenoord on the Sunday.
Given all this we headed indoors on the Saturday for some Ere Divisie ice hockey at the one Belgium team playing in this Dutch League. Fortunately we are experienced enough to know that, even though played indoors, many smaller ice arenas are still very cold and so dressed accordingly. And what a good job too, as a little bit of research would have indentified that HYC play outdoors!!! This, coupled with the fact that the game finished at 11:45pm, meant it was cold, very cold.
Still, what great fun. No plexi glass, just netting. Great bar by the side of the rink, hot wine, soup, coffee and warming spirits a plenty. Players and fans alike breathing mouth smoke and end to end action.
Ultimately the physical strength of the visiting team won out, but the score was tough on the home side.
