SG Wattenscheid 09 4-1 Roland Beckum
Oberliga Westfalen
Lohrheidestadion
9th June 2013
Having already won promotion, SG Wattenscheid had an end of season party. Women and children let in free, bouncy castle, live band and beer at 1 Euro. That all (except the last bit) sounds like a living nightmare to a forty something ground hopper, but the size of the stadium meant there was plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the game in their own way.
Two early goals and a third before half time (with an away goal sandwiched in between) meant the carnival atmosphere lasted thought out the game. Players once substituted were required to join the fans on the terraces (eventually together with all the unused subs) and in some cases climbed the fence to lead the chants.
For the record, the away team played better than the score line suggest, and in their number 7 had, I think, the best player on the pitch.
A small controlled pitch invasion greeted the final whistled and we left as the players were leading the singing infront of the band.
Our hosts for the day will now join the fun that will be Regionaliga West next season together with the likes of RW Essen, RW Oberhausen, KFC Uerdingen and, most likely unfortunately, MSV Duisburg. All of which will be something to look forward to as, like it's counter part in Krefeld, the Lorheidestadion will start to see significantly bigger crowds.
Miss NAC and I now bow out from football in Europe for the season, returning for the NAC v Swansea game on 10 July. But look out for our blogs from the MLB and MLS.
