Having the good fortune to find myself in the City of Venice on a Sunday and despite freezing temperatures able to attend a game I decided it would be rude not to.  Venice have fallen from Serie A gradually over the years and now find themselves in Serie D Girone C.  The ground feels like a temporary structure bar the main stand which we were in.  Pictures pretty much tell it how it is, but what it doesn't convey is that you are on an island in the middle of the lagoon.  Getting to the ground is probably the best part of this trip!

The football was probably a Conference or Conference South standard in general but the one thing that stuck out was the fact that all the players were very comfortable on the ball and technique was good....it really does leave you wondering where (and how) we go wrong in the UK!  Every single player had a good first touch.  That is all except the Venice captain whom I knew was not that good as my wonderful wife turned to me at half time and said (as she was leaving to go back to the hotel as it was far too cold for her....."please can you explain a) why he is captain and b) why is he even playing at all".

In complete agreement with TV images, this particular game of Italian football contain more than its fair share of diving and fake injuries BUT with a big caveat that the ref gave free kicks for very few and all the players simply got up, did not shout any vitriol at the ref in complaint and simply got on with the game.  If you find yourself in Venice then it is definitely worth a walk to this place, especially if it is not freezing cold!
