R FC Tilleur Saint Gilles
A Darkness Fell across the land......
I don’t normally take an afternoon off work and travel 180km for 5th division Belgian match, but I felt the footballing gods were telling me something. International weeks are normally a bit quiet at PDM towers. An aborted trip to Brussels for the Belgium v USA game resulted in me spending an enjoyable couple of hours catching up on my favourite websites (Ed…all ground hopping I hope!), when I came across this http://www.doingthe116.com/tilleur.htm . Given ‘doing the 116’ is one of my favourites I’m not sure how I have missed it before, but miss it I have. To be fair, when Jos describes a ground as ‘must see’, I tend to take notice. A check on the fixtures and there was a home game Thursday!
The 6:30pm start was unfortunate for two reasons; rush hour traffic around Antwerp and the early start means no floodlights (sorry web master). But even after a 2 ¾ drive through the pouring rain, I wasn’t disappointed. A decent enough game ended in almost farce as darkness drew in. The later pictures show how dark it was!!
The original Royal Tilleur club merged with FC Liege and continued to play here until 2000. In 2002 the locals decided that the area needed a reformed club. I don’t know about the area, but this ground is too good not to bear witness to football.
If I’m honest, Liege is not one of my favourite cities. You probably wouldn’t make a special trip to see this ground, but if you do go to Liege to see Standaard, keep an eye on the fixtures…..it’s well worth the 30 minute walk to Tilleur from Sclessin if they are at home.
