A Day of Irony
Well on the day that ex-shot Joel Grant missed a penalty that gave Barnet three points and all but sent Aldershot down, and NAC's Ere Divisie safety was all but guaranteed by of all things a Willem II victory, we had our own little bit of 'Mulder and Scully' in Hasselt. I snapped the picture to the left after, obviously, 18 seconds of the game. In what was a real blood and thunder match between thrid place and top, Sporting Hasselt took the lead for the second time in the 83rd minute with a wonderful cross and headed goal. 18 seconds is about how long after the restart it took the visitors to draw level again. Now what was it that the great Brian Clough said about teams being at their most vunerable when they have scored?
Right at the end of the game we had the extraordinary sight of Hasselt pushing their goalie up to try and get the win, losing posession and then Oosterwijk missing the empty goal from the subsequent break away with the home goalie nowhere. Tremendous fun for us neutrals, but not for the visitor's forward as the miss and resulting draw means that they a joined at the top by Leopoldsburg, with 4 to play.
The ground is a great old school ground, lots of terracing, pillars, barriers and fencing. The home fans were noisy and had the longest lighting flares I have ever seen. Enjoyable night out on what was otherwise a pretty depressing day.
