Rail choices.
Yesterday Aldershot surrendered their outside chance of the play offs. It may have been a slim chance. We probably wouldn't have made it. But why give up so easily? It's really is a wonder with so many fighting for contracts next season. This left me questioning why I was willing to waste my time on what may be another half performance. I'll inform you Monday after my visit to Home Park, but before then I have been given a free Saturday to visit whatever ground I wanted to within the South West of England. I went for Locality in the end as, to put it bluntly, trains in Devon are pants. Thinking about it most methods of transport in Devon are pants. Visiting the South West provides you with a smugness knowing that you, no matter how much you moan, you can get a train regularly. Yes, unless you live in Exeter or Plymouth, you cannot get anywhere. So the key to this choice was locality and how close it is to a Station. Sherborne ticked all the boxes. (And it's not in Devon, it's in Dorset)
It turns out the ground was closer than Google maps showed. Apparently it doesn't factor public footpaths through wooded areas. This meant that I was able to arrive in time for a few pre-game photos. Although this one was a little bland, best described as, neat tidy and functional, but nothing to go yeah lets visit here. I do wonder why I feel like I haven't taken enough photos at places like this. 2 sides were paths; one had a 50 seater stand that straddled the half way line perched upon an embankment. The and that you enter has a club house and what appears to be a load of sheds stuck together with the fronts ripped off providing covered standing. Oh and the view is ruined by the fences and Rugby ground. Despite this it's cheap and of decent quality. £1 for a portion of chips and £1 for a programme. After reading this I was a little surprised for a variety of reasons. Merthyr Town qualify for this league? and they also had a review of Walton Casuals ground. Still it made for some thought trails prior to the game.
This was an entertaining affair ruined slightly by the referees over use of the words "Please" "thank you" and "sir" to every single play. If this wasn't annoying every 30 seconds, when he wanted to talk to someone he would make a talking motion with his hand shouting "I just want to talk sir" oh and it rained a lot. Again. The score finished 2-0 to Sherborne but no one would have complained if the score line was 3-1 to Bridport, however in relegation scraps there are no ifs and buts. I hope the game is like this Monday.
After the game I had the ordeal of a half hour wait in the freezing cold waiting for my train after being soaked through for the best part of 45 minutes. Yes count yourself lucky those people living in urban Britain.
