Schalke 04, Veltins Arena
2 Games
Only fools and Horses.
The Veltins Arena opened in 2001 with a price tag of 192m euros. Since then it has hosted a champions league final (2004) and 5 world cup games (2006) including a quater final. The ground has a capcity of 61, 672 with terracing and 54,172 without. It doesn't have a feel of a football ground and I guess that is because it was designed with the idea of becoming an indoor arena. The record attendance at this place was 77,803 in an IIHF ice hockey match. The pitch slides out under one stand in order to get sunlight.
Today's game, the second visit for PDM, was Germany verses Austria. We left Breda in good time, but delays meant we were later than we would have liked on getting to the ground. We paid 5 euro's for a car park next to the ground, brought a standard half and half scarf and made the trek around the ground to our entrance. A security check and beverages later we were stood staring at a pole in the roof waiting for the national anthems. This done the game commenced. It can be described as nothing other than a stroll in the park for the germans as they strolled to a comfortable 6-2 victory.
