Salford 44-12 Broncos
Salford City Stadium
02/03/12
att 5,250 (yeah right, and Dordrecht really get 2,000 each week)
You can change the name as much as you want
But ultimately the club will always be the same. Late last season it was announced that Quins would be returning to their former guise, with new grounds being looked into. This season we have the 'pleasures' of on the road home games at Brisbane Road (orient) and Priestfield (Gillingham). This means inadvertently I can look towards adding more grounds to the 92. But before then we have the opportunity to visit the new and traditional grounds of Super league. Luckily the fixtures fell well so this Friday night we could make a dash up to Salford for the third game at their new ground.
Salford left their beloved Willows ground after 110 years there. Despite this it was fair to say that it would eventually cost them their place in Rugby leagues top flight, and as Wakefield and Castleford are planning to do, Salford have found a new ground. The Salford City Stadium has a capacity of 12,000. I am of the belief that this is a more thought out and over all better designed version of Sixfields, Northampton. It has a large Grandstand with 3 smaller sides, two being terraces. Wikipedia suggests that this ground cost £26 million to build. May I ask how the hell they spent that much on this ground?!?! I think Chesterfield's new ground cost 12. The city of Salford should think about suing it this is true. Three of the stands look half complete. There are no backing to the stands and all the facilities are rather basic. I can only assume that the Main stand we were sat in has better facilities than Wembley in the executive areas. Saying that, if this was Aldershot's new ground (it's red and blue!) and we spent half the amount I would be more than happy! there again it isn't Nene park. Apparently public transport is woeful but we wouldn't know as we paid in advance for parking outside the main stand.
The game itself was more like Broncos. Dominate 15 minutes. Forget all your fitness training and years of basic tackling techniques. Find your self 20-0 down at half time. I wouldn't mind if it were a team like Leeds that are going to finish around the top again, but Salford aren't that good. It's just they were better than Broncos. In years gone by I would of been confident of winning in Manchester. But this is going to be a long long season. The only saving grace is that Widnes appear to be just as bad.
