Lommel United 1-0 Royal Antwerp
Belgecom League
Soevereinstadion
31 January 2014
I think it fair to say that the season has not turned out as expected for Royal Antwerp. I'll be honest, I bought into the pre season and all the talk of 'this is our year' but the harsh reality, based on this fairly lifeless performance is that the Great Old will be in the second tier of Belgian football for at least another year. Obviously there is still hope that a playoff place can be won (although this period championship has started with two defeats), but even if they somehow manage that, success will be unlikely.
The game tonight will not live long in the memory and the surprisingly low crowd of 2,750 witness little in the way of flowing football.
The ground has, unfortunately, undergone some 'improvement'. The old wooden club house has either gone, or at least been hidden behind some form of electonic boards, and the corners, where once you could stand in the trees and watch the game, have been closed off.
Progress hey?
