Planning doesn't get you places
All week I had been struggling to find somewhere to attend. At one point my list of potential games featured; Enfield, Aveley, Peterborough, Derby, Notts County, Walsall and North Ferriby. Despite this I found myself on the south coast for yet another FA Cup game with Bideford being the visitors. I was left in the car park with enough change for a badge, programme and entry to get me by. After handing over £5 I headed to the near corner. It was here that I remembered that Gosport were the team that got through the last round because their net had a hole. A Bashley player had put the ball in to make it 2-2 but the ref didn't give it.
The ground is of a reasonable standard, situated in the middle of a large park. The two sides contrasting one another with the main stand is elevated for increased viewing, restricted by the posts that are holding the roof up, and the floodlights. This provided bench seating. Gosport Borough was spelt out in Blue and Yellow righting at the back of the stand. At either end of the main stand are a bizarre set of speakers, a nice touch. There is also a small press box that was very crowded for today's game. Next to this was a small food hut, AndyPompeyFan suggested on Twitter that I try the burgers, although I completely forgot. The opposite side was a nearer structure that opened in 2011 with seating for 300. Either end are paths, save for the club shop and social club in either corner. From the main side you are able to see over to the Spinaker tower in nearby Portsmouth.
The teams walked out to the song Jerusalem as I positioned myself in the corner nearest the Social club. Not a lot happened until I remebered I needed to visit the club shop, programmes were sold out but I was able to get a badge. The reason given was a point to the crowd with the comment "look at the size of it!" this is despite the crowd given being smaller than their last game, but I'm not one to moan. shortly after I came out Gosport had gone 1-0 up. Brett Poate curled a fine shot off the post from 20 yards out. After several goal line scrambles Gosport finally put their pressure to use when Luke king turned in a cross. After the break not a lot happened, although I did enjoy the last 5 minutes. Gosport held the ball continually in the corner I was stood next to and everyone time the ball went out the Bideford captain got more and more angry. It was like a mini comedy sketch! After the game I waited a bit to get some decent shots of the ground before making my way back to be picked up. In the next round Gosport will be playing away to Bath City, one of the more interesting ties if you ask me.
I would also like to add that I retract all statements I made about it getting cold. I managed the whole game in shorts and a T-shirt!
