Burnham 1-0 Hitchin Town
The Gore
14/01/14
Att: 125
Initial plans for a visit to The Gore had come on the Saturday leading up to the game, however due to fixing a fence I missed my train and as a result didn't end up at football. Browsing Burnham's fixtures I noted that a visit would come sooner than I thought, due to this game and my plans to go to Gateshead thwarted by a Theory Driving Test booked at a ridiculous time the following game. Mother DM was also using her last ounces of control on me in my march to freedom in August. Needn't worry though, as she promised to give me a lift, saving me £3.50 on the train and a mighty fine trek to the ground. As it was any money saved turned out to be a bonus. Now, for all you Students and 16-18 year olds reading, Burnham offer a Concession price. However this is limited to Senior Citizens, meaning we have to pay the full sum of £10 entry. A touch steep, I will admit.
As it is The Gore isn't a bad ground. The rest of PDM, and indeed the whole of Aldershot, visited for a Cup game a few years ago. I missed it for reasons I can't remember, probably playing Ice Hockey. 3 sides of the ground are flat standing, save for a small covered area along one side. The other side is a modern clubhouse, gym, Nursery School and not least seating area. An impressive facility that really dominates over the ground, with seating for around 300 at a guess. The only issue is that height of the roof, although most simply huddled in the back of the stand. I imagine the club gets a fair bit of revenue through this.
The game was a poor one, such that if I was in control of the game I'd have simply awarded both teams a point and gone home. This isn't just because I was soaked through, due to the onslaught of rain. Burnham scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute when a cross from the right led to a one on one chance that was poked in by the onrushing forward. After that there was little offered from either side in regards to genuine chances. The game was ruined somewhat by the officials, with some very bizarre decisions in regards to fouls both ways. I certainly couldn't believe that Home side were given 5 yellows and the visitors 6 yellow cards and a Red.
My final words are for the Hitchin twitter account, they raised a few smiles in the PDM camp with comments made in exchanges throughout the evening. Top work.
