Antonia 0-7 Royal Antwerp
5 July 2012
Football Loyalty
The homely confines of KFC Antionia played host to Royal Antwerp and their travelling army of fans as they kicked of the 2012-13 season. Regular readers will know that I have a real soft spot for the Great Old, which I am told is not allowed if I also like Club Brugge. Well sorry 'Football Supporter Rules', but any real football fan can't help but feel this way about a club with a recent history such as their's whose supporter base is as loyal as these guys are.
I wish them well for 2012-13, but recent history suggests that ultimately they will be disappointed. Sources close to PDM (that's you Hans!) tell us the new coach is experienced in getting teams promoted from the second division and that there are more players on the way. I hope you are right, I really do. But one thing will be guaranteed; the unwavering support of their fans home and away.
Antonia itself is a really pleasant provincial club, and showed a few more senior clubs how to organise a big day. Being July, naturally it rained. But that was no problem for some, simply borrow the dug out from a neighbouring pitch, move it into position and carrying on supporting your team. Simple really!
