Tier 4/5 Play Offs; ACV win 4-3 on agg
As is often said, football is a cruel, cruel game. And more often than not there is nothing more cruel than the end of seasons play offs. ASWH went into this game a goal down from the home leg, a game that they didn't play to their best and one won with a great goal. But even after that game I was sure they could beat the team from the north of the Netherlands.
Probably the last thing ASWH need was to conceed early, which the promptly did in the the 2nd minute. However, unlike the first game, they showed much more attacking intent and took the lead on the night (and levelled the tie) with goals from Michael van Dommelen (12 minutes) and Josiemar van de Werp (29 mins). Again though, the resilience of ACV showed itself as they went straight down the other end to take an aggregate lead.
The second half was nearly all ASWH as they sought the equaliser. The were rewarded in the 72nd minute when a shot from the edge of the box was deflected, the keeper now wrong footed could only palm the ball onto the post and Robbert Stout was left a foot out with the ball at his feet and a simple tap in.
Cue 15 minutes or so of classic counter attacking football, hard tackles and 100% effort, what more can you ask from a group of players? Then the footballing gods took over and struck their cruel blow. Entering injury time a mistake in the ACV defense left Robbert Stout with a clear shot at goal, but his effort went agonisingly wide. Tough on Stout, whose efforts against Hoek in the earlier round played a big part in ASWH being in this game. Almost immediately ACV went down the other end and the impressive Robert Mulder scored a terrific goal that levelled the score on the night and gave the home side the advantage on aggregate in the 91st minute. Cue wild celebrations from players and bench alike.
And so ACV advance to play Spakenburg in the final on Saturday, and ASWH are left with nothing, except the prospect of an exciting new season where they will no doubt challenge again for the Championship as well as playing in the 'main' KNVB Beker as a result of their sucess in the district cup this year. I started watching them as former colleagues are the captain and the physio, and I must admit I have developed more than a soft sport for the team for the team from Hendrick Ido Ambacht. Looking forward to next season.....Forza ASWH!!
