VW Hamme 2-1 Geel-Meerhout
GEMEENTELIJK STADION VIGOR WUITENS HAMME
31/08/11
Speedy Service Sponsored by Northern nakker (Spelt poorly)
Well he asked for a speedy service and that's what he got. Yesterday was either going to be a visit to Here or Union St Gilloise, However with time against us we headed to the small town of Hamme, Belgium. Parking was easy. The middle of the town square which is a 30 second walk to the ground. Spelt above and so I’m not going to spell it again.
Hamme Play their trade in the Belgian third division. A league that the regular followers will remember us watching last week. With the away team today being the hosts. Geel-Meerhout had sacked their manager after last weeks game against La Calamine and were at the bottom of the table with a record of W 0 D 0 L 2, Meanwhile Hamme had lost 1 and won 1. They should of taken an early lead but everyone thought it was offside including the player. Geel took the score in front of the away supporters after a penalty that saw Hamme go down to 10 men. Not much else happened until the second half when Hamme got an equaliser through a well worked goal with the scoreboard showing the time as 83. The game livened up with both home and away fans sensing a point wouldn't be good enough and bitterness transcended the air. Hamme kept up the pressure which was awarded in the 93rd minute when a dubious goal was given. The player cleared the ball but the linesman judged it to be over. The Geel fans, as last week, went mental and upon the final whistle were shouting abuse at anyone they could find, including their own players, they got so angry they woke up the local police who had a tough job of standing by the turnstile.
Now I know you probably weren't bothered about the match report and are really interested in what the ground was like. Well it had 4 social clubs for a start which were as followed: (not their real names)
The Old Farts lounge: a simple chalet with nothing but beer and coffee for those who are regulars for the past 50 years. Located by the turnstiles behind the goal.
The Anshop (deliberate mistake) and amateur DJ resort: Featuring a stall selling Badges and Shin-pads with the Hamme logo, the official replica shirts do not. During the game you can sit here and watch the game while the DJ blasts out songs not heard for 25 years. A decent view of the pitch is included. Our choice for refreshments. A wide variety included.
Prawnies Bar: Hamme's Finest Hospitality we didn't make the cut but it looked nice from the other side of the ground.
The Away Social: A bar for when Segregation is implemented so the Away fans can be made welcome. Not open on this particular visit.
At either end of the ground were uncovered terraces the away side, which second half consisted of on PDM's finest, was the newer and in better condition with training facilities behind it. Along one side was a covered terrace split half and half when segregation is implemented. Again the Away end consisted of newer Terracing. Along the opposite side was a large elevated main stand that housed two social clubs, The Anshop(deliberate mistake), Hospitality areas and changing rooms. It was of a good size and cantilevered. We estimated the crowd to be around 900 with around 300 away fans in attendance. Word of advice if you do decide to make the trip, Upon entering you have to by tickets for each block It was 10 euros to stand along the side or 8 behind the goal, we paid the 8 and then went and stood along the side so it obviously doesn't matter where you go. This visit will be memorable for Matthew deciding he was going to be the founder of Hamme's ultras movement. Leading chants in true German style (leg over the front in an empty stand) with the members total currently being...........1! All in all it was a good evening out in a decent ground. Hope you enjoy the Pictures!
