And so we finally return to photograph normality as we arrive in the wonderful city of San Diego for a couple of games with near neighbours LA Dodgers and their new superstar Yasiel Puig. However it was the home bullpen that was the star of the show tonight as their starter Clayton Richard left the game after only two pitches! Given the opposing pitcher was Clayton Kershaw this was some effort by the home pitchers.
The stadium, Petco Park is centrally located between the historic Gaslamp quarter (bars, shops and restaurants galore) and the bay. It was opened in 2004 at a cost of $450m and holds 42,524. The Padres moved here from Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the city's American Football team and, whilst I have never been to a game there, by all accounts this is a massive upgrade both in terms of location (Qualcomm is a long way out of the city) and facilities.
We had seats in the outfield on the balcony. Sight lines were terrific and, with the sun setting, it was picture perfect baseball. I was in such a good mood I allowed a rare picture of me to be taken!
And with tickets for the game the next day I didn't have long to wait to return.
