RFK Memorial Stadium - Washington DC
Situated to the east of the city, RFK Memorial Stadium was opened in 1961 and has a current capacity of 46k. In it’s heyday the Redskins attracted sellouts of over 56k to every game every year prior to their move to FedEx Field in 1996.
Over the years it has played host to several football, American football, college and baseball teams. The lower section moves so as to accommodate baseball (it costs $40k to move it from one configuration to the other and back……luckily the Nats have moved on!). This mobility means that the whole section shakes when fans jump up and down.
It is the original 60’s circular ‘cookie cutter’ concrete bowl, and it would appear that it will outlast all the others! It is now home to the city’s MLS team DC United whose home friendly game against Everton in July 2011 is featured.
Today the stadium stands as a reminder of the past. Very little improvements have been made for years now and the facilities are poor. The outside looks run down and the old Redskins colours are fading and peeling. It is hard to believe that much in the way of developments will take place all the time the only tenants are an MLS side. There have been many attempts to find a new home for the team (including an offer from Baltimore). I would imagine that any move away by DC would leave a very uncertain future for the stadium.
