Nuneaton 2-1 Aldershot
Liberty Way
28/01/14
Att: 718 (107 away)
Liberty Way has been home to Nuneaton since 2008, is in the middle of an industrial estate on the edge of town, and is shared with the Rugby Club. I'm afraid that's about exciting as it gets, in one of those games that Aldershot fans have already forgotten about. It was a complete contrast to the prior week in Barnet. Arriving early, I guess we counted ourselves 'lucky' that the game was going to go ahead without a pitch inspection, with it raining 'Cats and Dogs'. Sat in the lonesome Rugby clubhouse the onslaught from the heavens was relentless, as we looked over the ground and the players warming up outside.
The ground is fairly basic, with a capacity of just over 4,000. Away fans, when segregated like tonight, are housed in the smaller terrace at one end. A similar size to those at Barnet, with a capacity of 1,000. As with last week, it was made from metal. To our right was an uncovered terrace of 3 steps, with the clubhouse for the Rugby club. Opposite us was a larger terrace, for 1,800. The final developments in the ground were to our left. A small seated stand, for 500, was at the nearest third. Built for the 2010/11 season, there are aspirations to double it in capacity. To the far end was the clubhouse for the football team, with what looked like a patio in front.
The game - putting it nicely - wasn't very good from an Aldershot perspective. Although with admission costing me less than my Pie (with Gravy) I'm going to be restrained in my disappointment. Particularly as the Pie was one of the highlights. The Aldershot players simply didn't turn up for the first 85 minutes, with Nuneaton rightfully going 2-0 up. The first a fluke, I don't think the player meant it. The second a cool finish from some more sloppy defending. Aldershot got their goal late on through a neat Tristan Plummer. From then Aldershot showed glimpses of what we can do, we one shot cleared off the line and another going agonisingly wide. Ultimately, it was too little too late.
