Doing the Double
It's old so I tried a different effect
With Aldershot's game at home to Swindon having to be switched due to their involvement in the JPT final, I looked for a local game in a ground the looked half interesting. All the grounds around here that are yet to be ticked are of a stand and a field variety, commonly known as the Hellenic League. It was with much excitement that I found Marlow to be at home. It's one that I have had my eye on for a while after a few other websites have visited and some recommendations. So off I set on the scenic train journey (Not Maidenhead) along the River Thames to Marlow. It's a rather odd journey between Maidenhead and Marlow. There are four stops with each station being only one platform. Except Bourne end. Why on earth is Bourne end two platforms? I'd left in good time so I could contemplate this phenomena on the walk between the station and the ground. There was some confusion as I didn't realise there were some turnstiles in the corner nearest the station, so ended up walking another 5 minutes through the houses until I found the "main" entrance.
From here you walk "across the tunnel" along the main side. This has a couple of steps of terracing with the main stand set back a distance away. This stand makes the ground. Without it, it wouldn't be worth the effort. The windows on the side are kept clean for good viewing, you can look other to the hills. Underneath is a decent sized clubhouse and the seats are the same style as those that used to be in the south stand at Aldershot. Either side are are fake pigeons hanging from the roof, and there is the most bizarre no-smoking sign. Behind one end is a fairly large and covered terrace. Along the side is a similar sized terrace and roof. The oddity in this stand was the bench. It was just there. Set under the roof but not so far in that views are obscured by poles, almost as if it was deliberate. The final end was a small two stepped terrace that was uncovered.
Earlier in the season we were at the reverse of this fixture. Reading back, Marlow should have won but their number 11 missed loads of sitters. It's no wonder they are bottom of the table. If that didn't fill me with confidence then looking in the program made it worse. There last five games at home read LLLLL. Great. It seems rather fitting then that Chertsey took an early lead, only for Marlow to fight back in the second half to win the game, this time number 11 was on sync to bag the winner. So with the game complete it was on the train back towards Maidenhead. On the way up I handed noticed the ground about 5 minutes walk from Furze Platt station. After much research on the internet I found out that it was Holyport. One for another day perhaps.
