I want my sandwich!
Another Sunday and another chance for a game at a ground with two teams playing there. This week proved a slight hassle because we had visited nearly every ground but ultimately we ended up watching Aylesbury United who currently reside at Leighton Town, in Leighton Buzzard. This was a new ground for myself and one that I knew fairly little about as it wasn't until Sunday morning that we finally decided on the game, so for once what the ground was like was a genuine surprise, and to be honest I'm glad I did leave it as a surprise, as it was certainly more developed than I expected.
Parking was fairly easy upon arrival as there is a small car-park for the sports complex (which features the Cricket and Hockey club) just outside the turnstiles. The programme was also free with admission. As mentioned above the ground was fairly developed. The cricket pitch side was a path that stopped just before the halfway line. The opposite end was a small covered terrace, in the middle were two turnstiles that can provide alternative entrances although I highly doubt that these are needed that often. The other side was the main stand, a steep covered structure that had 6 blocks of 3 rows. The final end was the clubhouse and a small terrace.
The game was a fairly entertaining affair. Aylesbury started the match with 11 players and one more on the bench due to players being injured, cup tied and suspended. The one player actually on the bench (some were there in name only) was nursing bruised ribs. Both teams battled hard from the start without really taking control of the game. That was until the 20th minute when Jack Dunmore lobbed the ball in beautifully from the best part of 20 yards over the top of the stranded goalie. The score remained the same until half time. At Half time an announcement went over the tannoy asking all Aylesbury fans to attend a council meeting in the week. This is because they're trying to secure a move back to their former ground after leaving it 10 years ago. We (PDM) hope they're successful in returning home and wish them all the best in trying to end their exile. On the hour mark Kidlington managed to double their lead when a free kick was swung in to the back post where Curtin was stood to tap the ball in. Aylesbury's best chance of the game came when a shot rebounded back off the post (picture 45). The match ended on a bit of a sour note when Player-manager Tony Joyce was sent off for a second yellow card right at the death. He suffered quite a bit of abuse from the visiting players/staff/fans with a personal favourite being "lock up the clubhouse so he doesn't eat all the sandwiches" or something to that effect. Upon the final whistle there was some words crossed in the tunnel causing the stewards to forget to open it so we could exit it, but someone managed to open it and we left after what was a decent game.
EDIT: There was also a return for the PDM groundhopping mascot (picture1)
