Massive.
Situated in the lower leagues of German football is a team in Krefeld, numerous outings in the Intertoto cup and a cup winners cup semi-final in 1986, this is before we get to how many long they spent in the Bundesliga, yet few would of heard of them, why would they? Last season they were in the sixth division, yes they got promoted, we hadn't heard of them! That's why this ground came as a pleasant surprise.
Grotenburg-Stadion has a capacity of 34,500 and it is a monster. at one end is a medium-large terrace curved due to an old running track we believe. Along one side is a large main stand with a paddock in front. Block K houses the Ultras group who were particularly welcoming on seeing my Aldershot jacket and gave me and matt loads of free stickers, They were very good value and were exceptionally loud. The opposite side was a large seated stand that housed only the away fans. At the start of the game there were on last count 12. After about 10 minutes we looked away and about 200 more walked in without us realising. Bizarre. The final stand was the best. A large uncovered terrace with an old style scoreboard. Only one thing could have perfected the ground. Four old style floodlights painted in red with blue lines. They had them. The game was entertaining and the first goal was scored by the home goalie. Exciting.
Track this team’s progress in years to come. They are a fallen monster, as for us I’m glad I found this on soccerways it will be one that people won't notice which is rather undeserving on what is a fantastic example of what football grounds should be. It may of rained, It may have been wet, It may be sad t see this ground not reaching its full potential. I don't want it to change. I love it here, as would you. So where ever you may be reading this from next time you are in the Ruhr area of Germany, forget the bigger newer grounds and the lure of higher league football just get of your backside and soak the place in as it will be one you leave thinking, yes I’m glad i came here. It's an example of rotting gems of the beaten track that few have discovered. Get here.
