It's raining it's pouring
This "spring" evening saw a return to the Hellenic league, this time in the form of Wiltshire outfit Highworth. The Roaming reporter and I arrived within the town at 7:20 and made our way to the ground. We couldn't help but notice the cloud looming upon the club house but thought nothing of it so parted with the admission money. We started speaking to the man at the entrance and Highworth have plans to move to the Junior Football Club so we were glad to have made the effort, although the weather was more entertaining but more on that later.
The majority of interest of the ground was situated on one side. Straddling half way was one 50 seater stand, a covered standing area and then the other side was another small seated stand; however this was caged up for today's game. One end was a path and the other side was fenced up and not used (apart from the dug outs). This is due to the ground being shared with the cricket club. The final end was the club house and changing room complex.
The game was made enjoyable because of two factors. One of these was the slope. From one corner to the other, and if you kicked it up the hill you could be sure it wouldn't go for a throw in. This meant that both teams tired quickly and had to make their passes accurate leading to mistakes and sheer hilarity when they went to cross the ball but it ended up rolling away. The other factor was the wind and rain. They got heavier as the game went on and at one point an ascot player kicked the ball upwards and it ended up going behind him. So with a great big slope and slippy surface there would always be goals. This was proven as Ascot went 2-0 only for Highworth to earn a draw in the second half.
