USV Elinkwijk 2-4 Leonadis
Hoofdklasse A Zondag
Sportpark Elinkwijk
27 February 2013
Football Cliche Number 24
If ever there was a game of two halves this is it. At half time sat in the warm club house, Miss NAC and I were contemplating an early exit as the colds that had discouraged us from making the planned trip to Verviers worsened, against the backdrop of one of the most turgid 45 minutes of football I have had the misfortune to witness.
Still, given we were at a thrice rearranged Hoofdklasse game between the bottom side and a team in mid table what would you expect? Well certainly not the next 45 minutes that bore witness to 6 goals, endless other chances and one of those comical own goals that come along once in a blue moon.
The final score was a little harsh on the attacking spirit of the home side, but with defending like their you can see why they are bottom.
The ground was, like the second half, a great surprise. An unusual main stand, that is in fact much newer than it is made to look and steps around all three other sides; behind one goal one of the biggest pieces of terracing I have seen in the Dutch amateur games (complete with all of two crush barriers!).
Due to the unfathomable road network around Utrecht we actually arrived a few minutes late for once, although perhaps we were 45 minutes too early!
