Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 VFB Stuttgart
Bundesliga
Commerzbank Arena
2 March 2014
I last visited Frankfurt's stadium 26 years ago when it played host to the last game of England's ill-fated Euro '88 campaign. Totally rebuilt, only the surrounding woods remain from that visit. I'll be totally honest here, it doesn't really do it for me. It's fine, little to complain about (save that stupid spider's web holding up the american style score board), but there was no wow factor.
That said, the home support (who have been spectacular during their Europa League campaign this year) were as previously advertised, very noisy and very supportive. However, I was surprised it wasn't a sell out (especially the away end).
That, and the relatively poor game, was probably due to the fact that both sides have been struggling this season. Eintracht won courtesy of two late goals (having seen a penalty awarded and then over-ruled by a lineman) and, with Thursday football now confined to history, appear to have enough to pull away from the foot of the table. The visitors may have a more nervous end to the season.
Apologies for the poor quality photos.
