A Derby With A Difference
Ieper made the 15km trip to neighbours Blue Star Poperinge for the last derby match between the clubs. Next season the clubs will merge and play under the name KVK Westhoek in Ieper. Fortunately this will not leave this tight, but atmospheric ground empty as the other tenants, KFC Poperinge, will continue to play their 3rd Provincial League matches here.
But today we had the unusual sight of Popringe beating their guests and at the same time damaging their chances of promotion, which ultimately would be a case of self harm. Not that that bothered the home team who celebrated with great enthusiasm at the end.
Unfortunately the game was ultimately decided just before half time when Blue Star scored their second from the penalty spot. Unfortunate in that I had a perfect view of the tackle that led to the penalty, unlike I suspect any of the officials, as they would have waived the appeal away and booked the attacker if they had. A late goal from Ieper was in vain.
