The not so magical cup
After Aldershot put in an abject performance again yesterday I looked to one of the FA cup games on the Sunday to cheer me up a bit, even if neither were new grounds Deciding to sit at home and wait for the cup draw for the first round before finally making my mind up. Truth be told it was always likely to be Slough v Gosport for several reasons, most notably how much I enjoyed my visit to Gosport in an earlier round. as it turned out the winner of the replay would go on to play Mansfield away. About an hour before kick off we set off for the short journey towards Beaconsfield where I'd be left to suffer a poor game, nearly forgetting my phone and struggling to raise enough funds to pay the entry. In truth I needn't have worried as for the second time in two games I was allowed in at the discounted student price of £4, even though I forgot my NUS card. And without being told I shouldn't have been allowed in. For this game I decided to try something new, writing the blog as it happened, save for some edits. Because of this I apologize if this is a bit distorted or makes little sense, but it has saved me a lot of time.
The ground is one that seems to grow on you even if, in truth it is very basic, having opened in 1971. Situated in the corner of Junction two of the M40 and the A355 it is miles out of Beaconsfield and only really accessible for those in possession of a motor vehicle. One side and the end closest to the main roads are uncovered paths. At either end of the path along the side is a set of turnstiles. Behind the opposite goal is the clubhouse, this is small and got quite crowded at half time. The overhang on the roof for the the terrace. This is about 5 steps high but doesn't take up a lot of space behind the goal meaning it is deceptively big. The final side consists of the main stand and some small strips of terracing either side. The main stand has a capacity of about 150 with a modern looking press box attached to it. As mentioned, either side are a couple of steps of terracing.
The match started with slough kicking the ball as far as they could to try and gain territory, as you would in rugby, but they only managed to get the ball to me as I was stood behind the Gosport goal. Slough started better of the two teams putting pressure on the borough defence. Gosport had to wait until the fifth minute for first shot followed shortly after with a low drive from 20 yards. Slough continued to press but the match was evening out. Gosport's number 6 was given a yellow card in 13th minute for a rash tackle. Goalie comes out to punch ball away but Gosport player only succeeded in putting the ball over the terrace. Not a lot continues to happen as neither team can break their way through to goal. I'm exceedingly thirsty as they don't do cold drinks at the snack bar and the clubhouse isn't open until half time. TINPOT. Slough thought that they'd gone ahead in stoppage time when a kick from the borough goalie bounced of the forwards back and narrowly past the post.
HALF TIME; Gosport manager angry for some reason, personally I thought referee hadn't done a lot wrong.
Gosport re-entered the pitch to a chorus of boos with the home support getting behind their team and chanting "you're just a small town in Portsmouth" fantastic save early on to deny what should've been 1-0 to the visitors. The subsequent corner was wasted as the ball flew into the dual carriageway. In similar fashion to the first half neither team managed to make an impact into the game, although you could argue slough were the better team. Slough had a decent chance when the.ball was pulled back on the byeline and only a smart header from the defender stopped the unmarked attacker from opening the scoring. Gosport had their first real chance of the half when a corner was played back, the player flicked it.up before hitting.a hard drive narrowly over the crossbar from 20 yards out. The next opportunity came late on when a low cross was played across the gosport goal but the onrushing forward couldn't get his foot on the ball.
The game petered out to a draw as the rain fell, this was my signal to leave what turned out to be a disappointing game.
